Draw Near: What Intimacy With God In Real Life Actually Looks Like

The Real Face of Intimacy With God In Real Life

Let’s be real, sis: “intimacy with God” can feel like a fluffy church phrase until life hits hard. When your prayer life feels dry, your schedule’s packed, and your heart’s breaking—how do you actually draw near?

You don’t need a mountaintop moment. You need a kitchen sink moment. A curled-up-on-the-bathroom-floor moment. A “God, I can’t do this without You” moment.

That is intimacy with God in real life. And it’s holy.

“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”

James 4:8

Intimacy Is Proximity, Not Perfection

One of the biggest lies the enemy whispers to high-achieving Christian women is this: you’re not spiritual enough to be close to God.

He tells you:

You didn’t read your Bible today—God’s disappointed.

You snapped at your kids—He’s silent.

You’re running a business—you’re too busy for Him.

But sis, the Word of God says the opposite.

“For I am sure that neither death nor life… nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Romans 8:38–39

Real intimacy isn’t about performance. It’s about proximity. It’s choosing to whisper “I trust You” while your world is shaking.

Personal Story: My Bathroom Floor Encounter

There was a day I found myself sobbing on the bathroom floor—grieving, angry, overwhelmed, and spiraling in shame.

I was in the middle of building my brand, trying to look like I had it all together, while silently unraveling behind the scenes. Trauma I thought I had processed came roaring back like a freight train. And I remember saying, “God, I don’t even know if You’re listening.”

But in that raw moment, I heard Him whisper:

“I’m not scared of your pain. I’m already here.”

Y’all. THAT’S what intimacy with God in real life looks like. Not just worship music and highlighters. It looks like knowing He doesn’t walk away when we break. He leans in closer.

Let’s make it practical—real-life ways to invite God into your everyday chaos.

What Does Intimacy With God In Real Life Actually Look Like?

Let’s make it practical—here are 7 real ways intimacy with God in real life can show up:

1. Prayer in the Car Line

Turn off the podcast. Let your car become a prayer room. You don’t need fancy words—just honesty.

“Before they call I will answer; while they are yet speaking I will hear.”

Isaiah 65:24

2. Pausing to Worship Mid-Chaos

Yes, even with dishes piled up and kids screaming. Sometimes raising your hands while wiping tears is the most powerful worship.

3. Journaling the Messy Stuff

Write what you don’t want to say out loud. Pour it onto paper. He can handle your honesty. That’s the foundation of healing. This is where healing begins. From Broken to Bold: When Healing Births Your Creative Calling

4. Letting Him Sit With You in Silence

Not every quiet time has to be productive. Sometimes the most sacred thing you can do is sit in stillness.

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

Psalm 46:10

Stillness isn’t weakness—it’s where divine clarity enters.

5. Bringing Him Into Your Business

Stop compartmentalizing. Ask the Holy Spirit about your content strategy, pricing, even your client calls. He cares about your impact.

“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.”

Proverbs 3:6

6. Letting Go of Religious Pressure

You don’t have to “feel” something for it to be real. Just like marriage, intimacy isn’t always emotional—it’s also intentional.

7. Choosing Truth Over Feelings

On the days you feel distant, declare the Word over your emotions.

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

Psalm 34:18

Teaching Moment: Don’t Confuse Consistency With Closeness

Sis, let me free you: Your intimacy with God is not measured by your consistency. It’s measured by your surrender.

Let go of perfectionism and start trusting His blueprint for your future. Embracing God’s Blueprint for Your Life: Trusting God’s Unique Plan for Your Future

Can consistency help? Of course. But closeness comes when you let Him in—not when you check every box on your reading plan.

“The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”

Romans 8:16

You don’t earn intimacy. You accept it.

When My Business Felt Empty

There was a season I had everything “working.” My posts were polished. The email list was growing. People were clapping—but I was spiritually dry.

God said, “You’re talking about Me, but you’re not talking to Me.”

That wrecked me.

Since then, I’ve learned: when my soul is dry, it’s not a sign to work harder. It’s a sign to draw nearer.

Sometimes we don’t need another strategy. We need stillness. That’s what intimacy with God in real life teaches us—to pause instead of push.

Intimacy in Every Season

Sis, here’s what I need you to remember—intimacy with God in real life isn’t seasonal. It’s not limited to the quiet mornings or mountaintop retreats. It’s built in the trenches, in the monotony, in the middle of your real, raw, beautiful mess.

Whether you’re in a healing season, a building season, or a survival season—God doesn’t require a specific posture to draw near. He just wants your yes.

You can be postpartum, post-breakdown, or post-business burnout and still be held close by your Father.

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Matthew 11:28

You don’t have to have energy. You don’t even have to have words. All you need is willingness.

And if all you can do is whisper, “Jesus, help”—

That’s enough.

How to Rebuild Intimacy When You’ve Drifted

Okay, let’s get even more real. What if it’s been weeks, maybe months, since you felt connected to God?

Here’s your gentle (but bold) reminder:

Drift doesn’t mean distance.

Intimacy with God in real life doesn’t vanish just because you got busy or distracted. He’s not keeping score—He’s keeping space open for you to come back.

Start here:

  1. Confess it. “Lord, I miss You. I’ve been distant. I want to draw near again.”
  2. Create 5 minutes of quiet. No guilt. No agenda. Just sit with Him.
  3. Read one psalm slowly. Try Psalm 27 or Psalm 139.
  4. Speak His name aloud. Yes, out loud. “Jesus, I love You.” Let your own voice remind your soul.

“You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.”

Jeremiah 29:13

You’re not behind. You’re not broken. You’re just being invited closer.

You don’t have to earn closeness with God. Just give Him your yes.

Final Word: You’re Already Closer Than You Think

If you’re reading this, craving connection with the Lord, guess what? You’re already drawing near. And that’s enough to start the overflow.

He’s not waiting for your perfection. He’s waiting for your permission.
